North Mississippi Rural Legal Services
North Mississippi Rural Legal Services (NMRLS) provides civil legal services at no charge to low income clients and clients age 60 and older through its civil legal department, Foreclosure Prevention Project, Taxpayer Assistance Project, and Elder Law Project. NMRLS currently services 39 counties in the northern half of Mississippi with four offices, one of which is in Oxford.
Volunteer opportunities at NMRLS include:
• Assisting the civil legal department with client interviews, research, document drafting, and court appearances.
• Assisting the Foreclosure Prevention Project with client interviews and fact gathering, research, document drafting, and court appearances. • Assisting the Taxpayer Assistance Project with client interviews, client and IRS correspondence, case investigation, settlement negotiations, and document drafting.
• Assisting the Elder Law Project with client interviews, research, document drafting, and outreach projects. Two examples of outreach projects are
(1) Will days, during which the Elder Law Project meets with clients to finalize wills, powers of attorney, and advance health-care directives, and
(2) presentations on elder law topics made at various functions within the NMRLS service area.
NMRLS welcomes your assistance. Students who do their pro bono hours at NMRLS can be approved to do a full time externship in the following year. You may sign up for office hours and/or you can attend outreach projects in the various counties NMRLS serves (an NMRLS staff member will provide transportation).
