Master Naturalist Outings
Nature strolls with emphasis on observing and learning!

Meet at 10am at the trailhead with ending time about midafternoon. Bring lunch and drink, wear clothes and footwear appropriate for the weather. If you have them, bring reference books, note pad, binoculars, and anything else to aid in learning about these habitats.

Northwest of Covington is the Lake Ramsay Preserve consisting of hundreds of acres of longleaf pine savanna managed by the Nature Conservancy. As you may know, before colonial times, longleaf pines once dominated the forests that reached from eastern Texas to Virginia. Now four hundred years later, there are only remnants of this ecosystem still in existence. The goal for this private preserve was to restore and now to maintain a longleaf savanna community. With the long leafs established, specialized flora and fauna have been attracted to the savanna.

This Nature Conservancy site is open to the public via trails that meanders through the pines and along a forested creek. Scattered about are interpretative signs. Our plan is to take these trails through tracts of the savanna learning about this distinctive habitat of these tall pines and its savanna.

We are to meet at 10 am at the trailhead. Bring a day pack with lunch and drink, binocs and other appropriate items. Our outing will end in midafternoon after several hours of exploring this unique and appealing habitat.

Managers/Representatives of these public or land trust lands will be invited to attend. At times, we may be off the trail where the less adventuresome may not tread! Intent is to introduce public lands that are seldom visited and to learn about the flora of these lands.

No fee for the outing, everyone can bring one guest. Must contact Byron to attend (see above). He will send directions and other information once your email is received.

Every date and destination is subject to change-for a variety of reasons.

Driving directions will be sent on Thursday evening and other details before the outing.
