TITLE: The Road to Recovery: How the Audubon Coastal Bird Survey helps birds following the 2020 hurricane season
DESCRIPTION: The Audubon Coastal Bird Survey is a volunteer-based community science program designed to provide scientists with valuable data for addressing conservation needs of shorebirds and seabirds that breed, winter, and migrate along the Gulf Coast. Frequent coastal bird surveys during key migratory and winter periods are used to identify important shorebird habitats both locally and across the northern Gulf of Mexico. The program is already providing valuable population and habitat-use data for a variety of coastal waterbirds, many of which are experiencing population declines.
Understanding impacts of tropical disturbances, such as hurricanes and flooding events, to shorebirds and their habitats is an important step towards the recovery of local and regional coastal bird populations. The 2020 hurricane season had a record 30 named storms, including 12 U.S. landfalls, with 5 of those making landfall along Louisiana’s fragile coastline. As southwest Louisiana continues to recover, the need for Audubon Coastal Bird Survey volunteers is particularly critical. Please join us on Thursday to learn more about how you can help!
