Atlanta Legal Aid and Fathers Incorporated: Fatherhood Legitimation Workshop
Friday, November 10 2023
Project Description:
Atlanta Legal Aid has partnered with Fathers Incorporated to schedule monthly workshops for dads to get help filling out their legitimation petitions and court paperwork. The clients are all biological fathers who are not married to and never were married to the mothers of their children. Georgia law requires an unmarried father to file a petition for legitimation and custody to 1) establish himself as the child's legal father (that's legitimation) and 2) establish custodial rights and/or parenting time (this is his right to actually spend time with and make decisions for his child). Students can help the clients fill out their forms under the supervision of an attorney.
Volunteers will assist people with their Petition & Verification, Summons, and Case Filing/Initiation Forms only. This project is in person on Friday, November 3 from 1 pm to 3 pm at Pittsburgh Yards (352 University Ave SW, Atlanta, GA 30310). Attire is business casual. You are encouraged to wear a mask. This is a small room, and some of the clients choose not to wear a mask.
