Be a Fixit Clinic Coach at the Sustainability Academy's bike-themed Fixit Clinic where REI bike technicians and Fixit Coaches will help community members assess and troubleshoot broken bicycles as well as electronics, appliances, toys, fabric items, etc. Learn skills to prolong the life of your belongings and reduce waste.
Being a Fixit Coach is easy. Provide participants 1) guidance with tools and 2) encouragement to investigate their broken item. Be a listener more than a repairer. Let them talk about how they used it and how it broke. That often provides valuable hints as to what's wrong. See how much you can do without actually handling the item. Empower the item's owner to do the troubleshooting and disassembly. Move among items and consult with others to cross-train and maximize transfer of knowledge. No technical experience necessary! If you'd like to volunteer in ways other than being a coach, there are also roles such as:
-Checking people in
-Doing internet research on items and issues with that item other people might have had
-Documenting the Fixit Clinic with photos, video, or audio
