The Louisiana Iris Conservation Initiative (LICI) has been asked by the Nature Conservancy's manager of their properties in Grand Isle, La to put out a call for our volunteers to come back one last time to help clean up the iris area of Hurricane Ida debris and plant more irises.
We'll be working at the Nature Conservancy's Lafitte Woods Gilletta Tract to clear some grass off of the irises we planted last year, remove some trash that is spread around in the iris area and plant about 350 irises.
The Nature Conservancy is doing a clean up volunteer event all day being done at the same time. They also have employees from other Nature Conservancy properties in Louisiana coming to help out. They will be concentrating on cleaning up the front portion of the property of trash and downed trees.
We were pleasantly surprised to learn that the irises we have planted at this Grand Isle property survived Hurricane Ida's storm-surge. We went to the site last month and removed almost all of the grass mats covering the irises and planted about 350 irises. We will finish the job and plant the last irises of the season at this event.
I. giganticaerulea species irises from the LICI iris rescue program will be used for this planting.
Long pants and regular rubber rain boots are recommended for this event.
All help will be greatly appreciated.
Anyone can participate. This event is open to the public.
The town of Grand Isle has been hard hit by Hurricane Ida. We are hopeful that our efforts at the Gilletta Tract will be a small step towards the community returning back to normalcy.
