Urban Orchard Care
Saturday, August 27 2022
WHAT: Fruit trees need regular care to be productive and harvestable. Learn which fruit trees need care this time of year and practice with neighbors at the Delta Park Orchard.
Urban Forestry planted a demonstration orchard outside of our North Portland office in 2010. The orchard includes 55 diverse fruit and nut trees, from the traditional apples, pears, and cherries to paw paws, persimmons, jujubes, mulberries, and medlars. These young trees are now ready for their winter pruning. This is a great opportunity for beginners learn fruit tree pruning basics or for veterans to sharpen their skills.
WHERE: East Delta Park Orchard, 10910 N Denver Ave. Portland, Oregon 97217. Full directions will be provided to registered attendees.
WHEN: Saturday, August 27, 9:00 am - 1:00 pm. Registration will open at 8:45 am.
WHAT TO EXPECT: Following a tour of the different fruit trees in the orchard, UF staff arborists will give an overview of pruning basics and provide a pruning demonstration. Volunteers break into small groups to prune specific trees. No experience is necessary; we will provide all necessary training and tools on site. Please wear close toed shoes and dress for the weather.

Portland Parks & Recreation Urban Forestry's mission is to manage and ensure Portland's urban forest infrastructure for current and future generations. Portland’s urban forest consists of 220,000 street trees, 1.2 million park trees, and innumerable private property trees. Urban Forestry is involved in managing or regulating all of these trees to differing degrees. Urban Forestry staff issue permits for planting, pruning, and removal of all public and some private trees and are on call 24/7 to respond to tree emergencies.
