LA Neighbors for Neighbors Legal Clinic
Saturday, May 21 2022
LA Neighbors for Neighbors is a volunteer-led organization fighting for housing justice and services for unhoused neighbors on the Westside of Los Angeles. Every month, LAN4N hosts a "Resource Center" offering a broad range of supplies and services to unhoused guests. Guests are transported by volunteers to and from the event and invited to visit various stations including caseworkers, street medicine, DMV, vital records, hygiene, phone charging, CalFresh, showers and more.
Legal assistance is one of the most sought-after services at the monthly Resource Center. Unhoused Angelenos are often the target of police harassment, ticketing and violence. They are saddled with fines and sometimes the threat of arrest for crimes of poverty such as minor traffic tickets, civil offenses, misdemeanor crimes and sit/stand vagrancy laws. Without legal help, these fines add up, with disastrous consequences for the unhoused individual, their family and community.
LAN4N has partnered with Bet Tzedek, one of the nation's leading centers for social justice and legal advocacy for people living in poverty, to establish a legal clinic for unhoused guests at the monthly Resource Center. We are seeking law students interested in participating in this clinic alongside Bet Tzedek attorneys involved with the Lawyers Preventing and Ending Homelessness Project.
