Old Baldy Lighthouse Field Trip
Thursday, April 27 2023
During the summer, the Old Baldy Foundation and Smith Island Museum of History hosts 4th graders from schools across Brunswick County for a field trip to Bald Head Island and the Old Baldy Lighthouse. On the lighthouse grounds, the students learn about the history of the lighthouse, enjoy a historic hike on Fort Holmes Trail, explore biofacts with the BHI Conservancy found across Bald Head Island's main three ecosystems (maritime forest, salt marsh, and dunes), and climb 108 stairs and 5 landings to reach the top of Old Baldy Lighthouse and its breathtaking view of the Cape Fear River estuary.
Volunteers will assist with the BHI Conservancy staff in educating the students about the different ecosystems, wildlife, and communities that call BHI their home. We will have a picnic bench filled with biofacts/cool items found all around BHI's ecosystems and allow the students to explore them hands on. If they have any questions about the biofacts, then we are there to answer them and assist teachers & staff with crowd control (as some kids love to wander).
