Hoka Days: Leda Swan Dancers

Friday, August 02 2024

Check in and Concessions for Hoka Days:
@ the Powerhouse

Leda Swan Dancers thank YAC and the spirit of Ron Shapiro for the pleasure of introducing the haunting Japanese Dance Style known as Butoh via the Powerhouse Theater.

Butoh is famous for its modern qualities of shocking subject matter, exaggerated facial gestures, extreme sustainment and white body-paint. However, it is equally based in traditional Japanese aesthetics, like minimalism, nature-forms, delicacy, and the unknowable.

Our show's style ranges from slapstick through the sublime, presenting a full range of human emotion. The dances feature both subtle and spectacular movement, often within the same piece! Short explanatory narrations precede each dance-suite, relating Butoh more fully to contemporary Western audiences.

A lobby exhibit featuring Bonsai creations by Zach Adams and Ikebana arrangements by LedaSwan demonstrate many qualities common to these three Japanese art-forms.
