Holly Deep Dive Walk & Social
Saturday, December 17 2022
Now that it's winter, hundreds of holly trees are visible throughout Lacey Woods Park so lets do a Deep Dive Ilex Walk. Gather at the playground, 1200 N. George Mason Drive at 2 pm, Saturday, December 15. This one hour tree walk will focus only on hollies and we'll try to figure out if they are all Ilex opaca, or if some are from what Dirr's Manual of Woody Landscape Plants writes is the "Mind boggling genus of 400 species, probably more, evergreen or deciduous,.." If your yard has one of the many other species (Chinese, Japanese, English Holly) or some of the many cultivars and hybrids, please bring some leaves so we can check out the difference.
We'll also visit the location of the infamous pandemic holly massacre where dirt bikers cut down 10 holly saplings in one evening! And celebrate that biking in this park no longer happens and sprouts from the trunks are now 2 feet high. Then we'll go celebrate this at Nora's house, (5220 11th Road) with hot spiced cider and cookies; family and friends welcome to join us TS. Those wishing different refreshments are welcome to bring additions.
