Eradicating Invasives in Irwin

Sunday, October 06 2024

The Gardeners Club of New Canaan is attempting some experimental work in Irwin Park to eradicate some of the invasive plants. They are looking for a dedicated crew of SLOBS and/or their parents to help them with the labor. Please wear long pants and long sleeves and closed shoes. Bring garden gloves and loppers and pruning tools if they are available to you. You will be meeting with Leslie Kammerer at Irwin in the parking lot for instruction. Please be on time! Thank you!

Here is a little snapshot of the hands on work that you will be doing:
Here’s whats involved:
1) Cut knotweed stems fairly low to the ground, plastic bag all cut stems to be brought to the dump ( garbage bins, not yard waste, too invasive)
2) Pour coffee into hollow cut stems
3) demarcate area with stakes, twine, educational signage
4) Repeat process (potentially on other areas - there’s A LOT of knotweed!)
