Magee Park Plant Survey
Wednesday, June 29 2022
Help conduct an inventory of the species that are found in Magee Park. Plant species and beetle species are the current focus. This helps identify which species will be most impacted by the construction/use of trails. Species of interest include endangered species, poison species (e.g., poison ivy), and invasive species.
Sampling will be conducted on the proposed trail corridors leading through Magee Park (CRT Zone 3) and at random points to get a complete picture of what is growing throughout the park. Each group will conduct a survey around preselected GPS points that will be marked within the park.
Don’t have experience identifying plants and woody species? We will use a mobile app to help; just point your phone at it and take a picture, and it will tell you what you are looking at. There will also be experienced leaders available to help if needed.
Several dates have been selected to accommodate different schedules (June 22, 24, 25, 26, and 29). Volunteers can expect to spend 2-3 hours sampling points in the grid with their group. Participation from any age is welcomed. However, students younger than ninth grade must be accompanied by an adult.
Please register for whatever date (or dates!) that would work best for your schedule. All participants must complete a volunteer liability release form (attached). Long pants, long sleeves, and gloves are recommended due to the potential for exposure to poison ivy and other dangerous plants.
