Prison Accountability Project, a part of the Prison Law and Policy Program
Friday, April 08 2022
Project description: The Prison Accountability Project seeks volunteers! The Project, an initiative of the Prison Law and Policy program, is an effort to create a new pressure point to hold the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) accountable for official abuse and misconduct. In the Fall, we examined first person testimonials (https://prisonpandemic.uci.edu) of life in CA prisons during the pandemic. After examining dozens of transcriptions, we discovered a number of disturbing trends. For example, 38% of respondents indicated that they were exposed to Covid-19 due to a failure to follow protocol. This semester we have hundreds more transcripts to review. Additionally, we'll contextualize our results by reviewing administrative guidelines and relevant case law in addition to beginning a deeper statistical analysis of our findings.
How to get involved: The Prison Accountability Project is hosting a Letter Coding Marathon on April 8th! We're looking for volunteers to read through transcripts of calls and letters from incarcerated people recounting their experience on the inside during the Pandemic. Volunteers will be trained on how to code the transcripts so that the information can be effectively analyzed and contextualized for advocates. Food will be provided and participation can be counted towards your pro bono hours on Track It Forward. Registration will close on April 4 at 9pm.
