Transgender Kids in School Sports: Know Your Rights
Monday, September 26 2022
Georgia Equality (http://georgiaequality.org) has asked us to complete a simple Know Your Rights document to post on their website for trans youth and parents of trans youth.
Students a document that distills the rights of transgender youth in schools regarding their participation in school sports. Review the documents about minors’ access to HIV prevention and care to get a sense of what this could end up looking like. This should be a one-page document that provides a concise statement of the law that is easily understandable on a 6th-grade reading level. Please refrain from legalese and ambiguity. Each group will work on a small part of this project before a final product is assembled.
For now, please complete your group assignment as you are able. An hour or two a week should be sufficient. Email Kyle Hildebrand, at khildebrand1@student.gsu.edu, to be assigned a group number for your assignment. The Group Assignment responsibilities are as follows:
Group 1
Pull relevant case law that discusses youth rights. Big picture cases will be helpful as well as more narrow topics (inclusivity in sports/activities, discrimination against transgender students, etc.). For each case, provide the rule of law and why the case is/may be relevant. Stick to SCOTUS and Georgia Appellate or Georgia Supreme Court opinions.
Group 2
Find Georgia and federal legislation (Title XI in particular) that directly relates to transgender students in schools. This may include non-discrimination policy in the broader sense as well.
Group 3
Review current Georgia High School Association (GHSA) rules and regulations. Break down the current regulations into easily digestible bullet points.
If you come across anything relevant in your research, please mention that as well. Thank you for taking the time to work on this important document and supporting Georgia Equality!
