Help with Vybiral Grape Harvest

Saturday, August 24 2024

Pickers need to arrive by 8AM. The first 10 - 15 minutes will be spent reviewing OSHA regulations that I am required to tell the pickers about. I will also provide additional instruction about picking the grapes. Pickers should expect to work until at least noon. The goal is to have all the grapes picked no later than 1:00 PM.
Typically, in August, the grass is very wet in the early morning, and it can be a bit on the cool side. Wear shoes and clothes that suitable for those conditions. Some people like to wear sandals/flip-flops. However, I recommend shoes or boots, so your feet are protected. There were a few thistles in the vineyard. I dug them out but there could still be some spines from thistle leaves on the ground. In the past some pickers liked to wear long sleeve t-shirts because the grapevine canopy is wet too.
I provide the harvest tool, a grape fork. It is very safe to use. Pickers harvest the grape clusters, put them in a 5-gallon bucket and bring the bucket to the end of the vineyard. There I dump the grapes into bins that I take to the winery. A full bucket of grapes is 22 - 25 lbs.
It is possible that you may want to use bug spray or sunscreen. If you do so, wash your hands before handling the clusters.
Mid-morning there will be a break. I will provide doughnuts and Gatorade.
The vineyard is located at 1311 County Road 13 (intersection of roads 13 & J), approximately 3.5 miles east of the fairgrounds and 1 mile south.
